Fieldwork Along the Yorkshire Coast

Unit code EART60230

Our Yprkshire Coast field course uses well exposed coastal outcrops to introduce a variety of clastic and carbonate sedimentary systems. The outcrops, located between Whitby and Flanborough Head, are used in the context of petroleum systems, emphasising their potential as source, reservoir and seal
  • When is the fieldtrip?

    The field trip is for 5 days during October as part of the MSc Petroleum Geoscience.

  • Where is the fieldtrip?

    You will be staying at the Grand Hotel, Scarborough.

    Accommodation provides breakfast and an evening meal. We will stop at supermarkets to pick up lunch, and there will be plenty of opportunity to sample Whitby's fish and chips.

  • How will we travel to the Yorkshire Coast?

    Travel from Manchester and around the field area will be by coach. Further details will be provided closer to the time of the trip.

  • Yorkshire Coast MSc 2017 Saltwick Nab
    Yorkshire Coast 2017 Staithes
  • What will I learn?

    The fieldtrip will introduce you to the principles of integrating field observations conducted at a range of scales to assess effects on petroleum systems. You will be trained in:

    • the design and implementation of field investigation techniques to gain sedimentological and structural data at a range of scales;
    • observing and interpretating outcrops in terms of hydrocarbon potential.

    By the end of the course you will be able to:

    • accurately characterise a sedimentary outcrop;
    • recontruct environments of deposition based on your own field observations;
    • understand the influence intrinsic and extrinsic factors have on the depositional record;
    • understand the utility of outcrop in building subsurface models.

  • What equipment will I need?

    Essential field course items are:

    • appropriate footwear (i.e. walking boots);
    • walking trousers or shorts;
    • wet (waterproof) weather field gear;
    • rucksack;
    • hard hat;
    • notebook;
    • tape measure;
    • sun hat;
    • sun cream.
  • How will the field course be assessed?

    Assessment is based upon fieldwork exercises, including:

    • characterisation of sedimentary architecture through sketching;
    • characterisation of sedimentary architecture through sedimentary logging.
  • Who can I contact regarding the Yorkshire Coast MSc field course?

    For more information visit the course unit specification or email course leader Dr Rufus Brunt.

  • Did you know?

    The trip will lead you through Yorkshire's Jurassic coast. Dinosaur tracks and fossil finds are hosted in Scarborough's Rotunda museum, a building designed by William Smith; often described as the father of Geology.

    More about the Yorkshire Coast

    As well as having some of the best fish and chips in the UK and being the inspiration for the Gothic novel Bram Stokers Dracula, Whitby is also home to the Whitby Mudstone; an extremely low permeability (0.01 mD) shale.
