Analytical Facilities

Manchester Analytical Geochemistry Unit

This facility includes a number of analytical instruments, mostly for the purposes of elemental analysis of waters and solid geological media, together with sample preparation areas.

Environmental S.E.M.

This laboratory houses the FEI XL30 ESEM FEG, which is capable of operating over a range of water vapour partial pressures. The instrument is highly versatile and can be used for investigating the morphologies and elemental compositions of a range of biological and mineralogical specimens.

Cameca electron probe

The Cameca SX 100 Electron Microprobe is a fully digitized instrument with highly integrated electronics and full automation which can be set up for unattended analysis and evaluation.

Scanning electron microscope

The JEOL JSM-6400 is our work-horse Scanning Electron Microscope. The instrument is used extensively by both staff and students in a range of applications, although it is particularly popular for the imaging and analysis of petrographic specimens.

XRD & Mössbauer

The XRD lab deals with classic geological problems such as soil lithography and mineral phase identification and the Mössbauer spectrometer allows studies of the crystal chemistry of iron in minerals (oxidation state, spin state, co-ordination and covalence).

Thermal analysis

Mass and energy changes within a sample can be measured as a function of temperature / time using the Differential Scanning Calorimeter / Thermogravimetry (DSC/TG) instrument.

Research Labs

Geomicrobiology Laboratories

Laboratory for the advanced characterization and analysis of novel, nano-scale biominerals for both commercial exploitation and remediation applications.

Radionuclide biogeochemistry laboratory

Radiochemistry lab designed for research into molecular scale understanding of the behavior of radionuclides in natural and engineered environments.

Geomicrobiology preparation laboratory

Laboratory with dedicated equipment for the production of media and materials to support research in the Geomicrobiology, Radionuclide Biogeochemistry, Biomineral Synthesis and Molecular Ecology Laboratories.

Organic geochemistry laboratory

Specifically designed laboratory for the preparation of samples for organic geochemical analyses, from initial sample handling and preparation, through extraction and (pre)-fractionation to derivatization.

Molecular ecology laboratory

Laboratory for microbiological and molecular biological characterization of environmental samples in order to understand the role that microorganisms play in key geological processes.
