Why study geography and geology?
Are you interested in the origin and development of our landscape and in how plate tectonics controls the surface features of the Earth such as earthquakes and volcanoes? Are you unsure about whether you want to focus on rocks and minerals or the features and processes that shape our world?
Geology and earth sciences attract people who wish to study the dynamics of the Earth we live on, its resources, and the most economic and sustainable way to use these resources.
The joint Geology and Geography degree is run by the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences and the School of Environment and Development. You will be able to choose from a wide range of units taught by staff from both Schools which focus on Earth processes on all scales, from looking at minerals down a microscope to mountain building, global climate and even solar system evolution. If you are not sure whether you love rocks more than physical geography then this is an ideal option for you.
What will I study?
Our joint degree is a field-based, multi-disciplinary course that integrates the principles of chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics in the study of Earth processes and history. Through the two schools you will study a broad range of topics including plate tectonics, glaciers, floods, groundwater flow – even dinosaur evolution.
We train you up to be a scientific detective who has the knowledge and tools to reveal the past and the future of the Earth.
If you enjoy working outdoors, have a good scientific background, and are interested in understanding how the world around you works then geography and geology, or perhaps another earth science, may be for you.
Why should I choose Geography and Geology at Manchester?
Our broad geology and earth science-based units cover all major aspects of geology and train you up to be a competent geoscientist. At the same time, your geography units will allow you to take a holistic perspective and appreciate how landscapes are formed and altered; geography and geology are intertwined and by studying each discipline will inform the other.
As with all our degrees, the Joint Honours Geography and Geology BSc is ideal if you want to keep your options open or are uncertain about your future career plans. It will allow you to pursue postgraduate study in either subject and general graduate employment.
The School is open and welcoming, with low staff:student ratios. We have a supportive family atmosphere.
The courses are accredited by the Geological Society of London and there is a wide choice of options in the third year. You will enjoy ample opportunity to put what you’ve learned in to practice on fieldtrips.
