Environmental Science with a Year Abroad BSc
Our Environmental Science with a Year Abroad BSc Programme
Ensuring that human needs are met in a sustainable way, that everyone has access to clean water, clean air and the resources required for agriculture and industrial activity make up the focus of this four year undergraduate science degree. Key topics include resource recovery and pollution control.
Recent enhancements to this course
A New School
Autumn 2016 sees the launch of the new “School of Earth and Environmental Sciences”. This will mean a major improvement in the student experience for those studying in the Environmental Science degree programs here.
This new school will mean:
More leading academics - 15 academic staff moving from Life Sciences to join our environmental chemists and physicists.
More research options - Our increased number of academics will allow for more choices of topic for student’s when deciding on their undergraduate dissertations (in the 3rd year)
More bioscience based teaching - We’ll will also now have a wider range of academics within the school who can teach bioscience related themes on our residential field trips.
Overall, this new school will give Environmental Science students a more thorough and holistic educational experience throughout their studies.
A new professional accreditation
The prestigious Committee of Heads of Environmental Sciences (CHES) have recently awarded all three of our Environmental Science degrees programs a professional accreditation. They committee commented in particular that our courses were “comprehensive programmes, with clear methodological approach”, showed “breadth of generic skills development”, and provided “excellent careers service support”.
Any programme accredited by CHES meets high standards, contain a strong component of practical, field and theoretical activities, and has excellent opportunities for training, work experience and links to the professional environmental sector.
This new accreditation shows that being part of the Environment Science degree course at here gives you a thorough, varied and supportive atmosphere, so you can truly realize your potential.
A new school Twitter channel

Ensuring that human needs are met in a sustainable way, that everyone has access to clean water, clean air and the resources required for agriculture and industrial activity make up the focus of this three year undergraduate science degree. Key topics include resource recovery and pollution control.
We aim to train scientists that are aware of these issues and who can communicate them to others. Our degree develops three fundamental science strands which are then woven together by integrative modules to give perspective and allow you to apply scientific concepts to real environmental problems. This is a multi-disciplinary, research informed degree which includes modules taught by active researchers across a range of areas including Biology, Geography, Planning, and Earth Sciences. These are high profile academics whose current research is re-writing the textbooks of yesterday.
The three fundamental science strands are:
- Biosciences: as applied to key ecosystems, with aspects from applied environmental biology, microbiology, and geomicrobiology
- Geosciences: as applied to Earth processes, takes advantages of advances in geochemistry, biochemistry, and mineralogy
- Environmental Physics: as applied to Earth as a system and uses examples from atmospheric physics and geophysics
Integrative modules include tutorials, field courses, and project work. Our hands-on approach provides you with practical sessions and ample opportunities to put what you’ve learned in to practice on fieldtrips in the UK and abroad.
Following student feedback we have made significant changes to how we teach and organise the course and provide you with advice and support. Our latest scores in the 2012 National Student Satisfaction show substantial improvement in these areas. Overall satisfaction has increased from 69% to over 80%.
