Awards and prizes

We recognise the achievement and success of our students. Each year we present awards to the top performers in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

First Year

FM Broadhurst Prize -  best overall performance in Geology (single or joint honours) first year examinations.

  • Best overall performance in Single Honours and with Programmes (Medal)
  • Best overall performance in Geography & Geology (Medal)
  • Best overall performance in Environmental Science and Environmental Studies (Medal)
  • Best overall performance in Petroleum Engineering (Medal)

Petros Geosciences Award (First Year) – awarded to the best overall student in Petroleum Engineering. The award also considers any extra- curricular and outreach activity the student has contributed to during their first year.

Second Year

WH Morton Prize - best overall performance in Geology second year examinations (Prize & Medal).

  • Best overall performance in Geography and Geology (Medal)
  • Best overall performance in Environmental Science and Environmental Studies (Medal)
  • Best overall performance in Petroleum Engineering (Medal)

Mineralogical Society Student Award - awarded to the student who in the view of the examiners has produced the best performance in examinations in mineralogy in the penultimate year of their undergraduate degree (two-year associate membership of the Mineralogical Society).

Palaeontological Association Undergraduate Prize - Selection of the award is made on the basis of peformance in relevant exams, normally Second Year but a Third Year candidate may be considered (free membership to the Palaeontological Association) (Award)

The Calvert Armstrong Memorial Fund to support undergraduate students undertaking independent geology field projects

Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain (PESGB) ‘Young Professionals’ (YP) undergraduate sponsorship – 
one year’s free membership to the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain and £100 to towards their individual mapping project.

Petros Geosciences Award (Second Year) – awarded to the best overall student in Petroleum Engineering. The award also considers any extra- curricular and outreach activity the student has contributed to during their second year.

Third Year

MacKenzie & Guilford Prize - best first class performance in each of the Single Honours and Geography and Geology programmes.

Colin Hatfield Prize - awarded to the student reaching the highest standard in the 3rd year mapping project (and medal)

Angela Speakman Prize - awarded to the student showing the greatest aptitude for Palaeontology in their final year

  • Most service to the School over 3 and 4 years (Medal)

Fourth Year

  • Best final year MEarthSci student (Medal)
