Courses within the school available through clearing and adjustment will include:

Geology BSc (3year):

This is a broad degree course that covers all areas of Earth Sciences including plate tectonics, the origin of rocks and minerals, the evolution of life on Earth, Earth resources, geophysics and geological mapping. Team work, problem solving and field skills play a key role in integrating all the elements of the subject. A wide choice of options in the third year allows you to explore more specific career paths and provides an ideal foundation for a postgraduate Masters degree or entry to graduate employment in the resources and geotechnical industries, or environmental geoscience. The course is accredited by the Geological Society of London.

MEarthSci (4 year):

An undergraduate masters programme that provides a broad background in Earth Sciences. You can follow a geology, environmental and resource geology, geochemistry or planetary geology pathway through the earlier years of the course. In the 4th year students take masters level taught courses and undertake a research project in an area of their choosing with staff at the cutting edge of scientific research, often leading to published scientific articles. There is the option to study abroad for one semester. The course is accredited by the Geological Society of London.

Geochemistry BSc (3year):

In this programme students with a good background in physical sciences gain a broad education in Earth Sciences along with a more advanced understanding of the application of chemistry to natural systems and their evolution through time. It provides the opportunity to apply geochemical methods to such diverse problems as the origin of the solar system and polluted groundwater. The course is accredited by the Geological Society of London.

Environmental and Resource Geology (ERG) BSc (3 year):

This programme provides students with a broad background in Earth Sciences and specialist training in the environmental impact of geological and related activities. This programme is suited to students interested in exploration for Earth resources but concerned about the environmental impact along with the safe disposal of any waste products. The course is accredited by the Geological Society of London.

Geology with Planetary Sciences BSc (3 year):

This programme provides students with a broad background in Earth Sciences, including field skills, whilst incorporating the latest ideas from astronomy and other disciplines about how solar systems and the planets they contain form and evolve. Students take modules in physics and maths as well as in geoscience, and undertake a planetary project in their third year.

Geology with Planetary Sciences (MEarthSci):

This programme is offered over 4 years and provides students with a broad background in Earth Sciences, whilst incorporating the latest ideas about how solar systems and planets form and evolve. In the fourth year students follow several MSc courses and complete a research project in planetary science.

Environmental Science BSc (3 year):

A blend of Biosciences, Geosciences and Environmental Physics. This programme provides students with a broad background in environmental issues and sustainability, with a particular focus on scientific skills. Students gain field and lab experience and this hands-on approach provides ample opportunities to put what is taught in class into practice. This programme is taught across the university, there are modules in Life Sciences and in Environment and Development.

Environmental Science with a Year Abroad BSc (4 year):

Between years 2 and 3 you will spend a year studying Environmental Science topics at one of our partner universities. You will follow course units that complement those available here at Manchester.

Environmental Science with Industrial Experience BSc (4 year):

You undertake an industrial placement with a company of your choice between year 2 and 3. We will help you identify a suitable host organisation and throughout your placement you will be supported by a member of the academic staff here at the University. Geography and Geology BSc (3 year):

This varied course focuses on the natural processes that occur on the Earth’s surface. If you are fascinated by rivers and seas, get excited when you spot unusual strata on a cliff, or just have a strong interest in physical geography, then this joint degree in Geology and Geography could be for you.
