Field courses

If you enjoy the great outdoors then our programmes provide you with ample opportunity to explore it. Field courses are a key component of all our undergraduate degrees and masters courses. We want you to have all the skills you need to work in the field so we give you the opportunity to practise the science you learn in lectures.

Our field trips give our students a taster for future careers as geologists, geochemists, environmental scientists and engineers. They form an essential part of the majority of our courses, allowing integration of the skills learnt from lectures and laboratory classes.

We travel to geologically fascinating areas in the UK and abroad. From Scarborough to Spain you will learn first-hand the skills and techniques practised by professionals in their subject areas.

Fieldwork ranges from one day ‘look and see’ courses to longer expeditions investigating specific areas or learning particular techniques, and all of our Geosciences, Environmental Science and Petroleum Engineering courses involve compulsory field trips in the UK and abroad.

While at Manchester I enjoyed the field trips the most, as it gave me the chance to apply the knowledge that I’d gained in the classroom. I also enjoyed the choice of subjects that were available, giving me the freedom to choose my own route.
