Research link to teaching
MSc students are an integral part of the broader Petroleum Geoscience and Engineering Group. Active research is being carried out across a broad range of areas sponsored by most leading international oil companies, including: Anadarko, BG, BP, ConocoPhillips, Dana, Exxon, Hess, Repsol, RWE, Shell, Statoi. This state-of-the-art research is fed into the MSc courses. In addition, PhD and postdoctoral researchers regularly give seminars and there is a close interaction with the MSc class, providing a stimulating atmosphere to work in.
Details of the Research being undertaken by Groups within Basins and Petroleum Geoscience can be found in the following sections:
The North Africa Research Group (NARG) conducts multi-disciplinary basin analysis research with a petroleum geoscience theme in Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Libya and Tunisia. The research includes projects with integrated sedimentology, geochemistry, seismic interpretation, petrophysics and reservoir engineering.
The STRAT Group undertakes outcrop and sub-surface studies around the world, all focused on stratigraphic prediction through understanding the external controls on depositional systems and the filling of sedimentary basins. Our approach takes a holistic source-to-sink view of depositional systems and includes interaction with geomorphologists, oceanographers and geophysicists.
The Mudstone and Shale-Gas Research Consortium (MSGR) is a cross faculty research group focusing on the characterization, analysis and modelling of mudstones as shale-gas and shale-oil reservoirs from basin to pore-scale.
The overarching goal of the PD3 consortium is to build a world-leading centre of expertise in carbonate petroleum geoscience focussed on process-based predictive understanding of deposition, deformation and diagenesis (PD3) in carbonate systems.
Integrating LiDAR, DGPS, photogrammetry and traditional field methods are important for improved understanding of sedimentology and structure. These quantitative techniques are applied to petroleum geology and geo-conservation among others.
