Jonathan Redfern

Jonathan is Chair of Petroleum Geoscience and Course Director for the Petroleum Geoscience MSc.

Our graduates are employed both by the major international oil companies, consultancies and service companies. They stand out as being technically competent, able to communicate their thoughts and opinions both verbally and in reports, and having been taught to think critically about problems.

Keeping the course fresh

We regularly review the course content, based on feedback from students and current activity in industry. Based on their suggestions we revise the course making additions such as dedicated sessions on Unconventional Resources and Shale Gas, a new carbonate sedimentology fieldtrip, revised communication skills to focus more on CV and Careers / Interview skills, and some timetable changes to improve the flow of the courses.

The course is an applied programme that aims to develop key skills directly relevant to the oil industry. We use all the industry standard software and typical oil industry data. The Petroleum Geoscience MSc delivers a solid grounding in fundamental knowledge, delivered by a leading teaching team of academics.

Excellent teaching

The course is structured to develop the skills of the participants. We teach the lateest techniques in industry, whilst building core skills. We aim to provide the best teaching environment possible, with the largest workstation suite in the UK offering all industry standard software.

Our graduates are employed both by the major international oil companies, consultancies and service companies. They stand out as being technically competent, able to communicate their thoughts and opinions both verbally and in reports, and having been taught to think critically about problems. They join us as first rate geoscientists, they leave us after a year as petroleum geoscientists; graduates ready for a role in the oil industry or going on to undertake further studies as PhD students.

Offering the best

We have built the courses reputation by offering the best tuition, very strong applied links through a dedicated expert teaching team and links with industry, and offering the best teaching environment.

Our list of sponsors for research and  and teaching includes most  major oil companies sponsors.  Many companies come in the year to give careers talks, interview on campus and attend the final presentations in September.

In the end it is the teaching team and the facilities that students have access to that makes this course, at Manchester, the best.
