What is a PhD, MPhil or MSc?

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences offers you the chance to work and research alongside some of the best scientists in the field through taking one of our research degrees - the three-year PhD or the one-year MPhil or MSc by Research.

PhD research degree

A PhD research degree takes place over three years, during which you will carry out research into the area you have chosen and finish with the publication of your own thesis (on which you will be assessed). Throughout the course of your PhD you will receive supervision from a member of academic staff in the School which takes the form of regular meetings about your work.

MPhil/MSc by Research degree

An MPhil research degree takes place over a single year, during which you will carry out research into the area you have chosen and finish with the publication of your own dissertation (on which you will be assessed). The MSc by research involves taking some taught courses (which are assessed) and a dissertation on a half year research project. Throughout the course of your MPhil or MSc by Research you will receive supervision from a member of academic staff in the Department which takes the form of working with you supervisor on a scientific project and regular meetings about your work.
