The NanoSIMS, a new facility in the University for elemental and isotopic analysis at the nanoscale

Prof. Ian Lyon, School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, The University of Manchester

The NanoSIMS is a state-of-the-art microscope capable of quantitative imaging of elements and their isotopes down to ppm abundances at a spatial resolution down to 50nm.  This presentation will show how NanoSIMS achieves this capability and the new possibilities for research that it enables in the University.  Examples in geological, biochemical, cosmochemical and materials science will be shown to illustrate the new capabilities that will be available that are a serious analytical challenge for any other technique.  Access to the instrument, applications and sample preparation will be discussed.
